Tuukka Rask fights for redemption

Posted on 12:04 by RAJA BABU

21 saves on 24 shots = :'(

Emotions? Fatigue?  The sheer fact that they were playing against the best team in the leauge? Blame it on what you want, but the outing facts remain the same, when the final buzzer sounded on yesterdays manatee make up of Friday's cancelled game with Pittsburgh, Tuukka Rask had played his worst game of this 2013 NHL season. As said before, Rask gave up 3 goals on 24 shots amounting to a horrendous .875 save percentage as the Bruins gave up an early 1 nothing lead before ending the night on the wrong end of a 3-2 final.

Looking back on the night, the Bruins opened the scoring just over 10 minutes into the game as after a slashing minor assessed to Matt Cooke, 3rd year Bruin Brad Marchand absolutely picked apart the Pittsburgh defense before preforming a beautiful toe drag to tuck his team leading 17th tally of the year past Thomas Vokoun. At that point the Bruins were dominating play and when the 1st period ended those watching would not be faulted to believe that in 40 minutes the Bruins would manage to pull out a victory. They were wrong. By the end of the second period, despite the Bruins once again out shooting the Penguins 15 to 11, the game was tied and Tuukka Rask seemed to be struggling.

"Not too often I cost a game. Today I did. That's just how it is sometimes," ... "It's always tough for a goalie when you don't break a sweat and you lose, so that kind of sucks." Rask said following the game, and really while Rask did in fact loose the game, it wasn't just the sheer fact that he was outscored that made last night sting so bad. What was so terrible about yesterdays 4th straight loss, was the pathetic quality of the last two shots scored against Rask.

In the wake yesterdays game, Tuukka Rask basically threw himself under the bus, yet after what ranks as one of the worst games he has ever played, coach Claude Jullian never lost faith in his starter as he shocked us all by, giving Rask a second chance if you will in today's Sunday afternoon clash with the Panthers.

Less than 24 hours after loosing 3-2 to the Penguins, the Bruins downed the Panthers, all riding on the back of the goalie whom they never lost faith in.

27 saves on 27 shots= :)

Patriots 2013 schedule released: a week by week preview

Posted on 10:25 by RAJA BABU

12 years without loosing the division. For so many years Tom Brady and the Patriots have dominated the east and when the 2013 schedule was released it seems like the Patriots have a chance to extend that streak to 13. 16 games, 13 different teams all spanning a 4 month regular season that always seems to pack a punch. Here i will go week by week profiling and predicting the outcome of each of the Patriots 16 games this year.

Week One: Patriots at Bills
2 weeks after the conclusion of the preseason, the Pats will travel to upstate New York  as they look to use a historically week team to springboard themselvs out of the gates to start the season.
Protected final: Patriots over Bills

Week Two: Patriots vs Jets
Its been a rivalry seemingly dormant ever since Rex Ryan basically flew his team into the ground  meaning that a revamped patriots pass defense combined with a leaner meaner Vince Wilfork will place Marc Sanches in a torture chamber and most likely lead to a Patriots victory.
Projected final: Patriots over Jets

Week Three: Patriots vs Buccaneers
The last time they played, the year was 2009 as the Patriots played to a dramatic 35 to 7 rout of the 'Bucs'. Yet while historically, the Pats have dominated Buccaneers, the possibility of a Josh Freemen comeback combined with a high 1st round draft pick for Florida might make this a much tighter game than expected
Projected final: Patriots over Buccaneers

Week Four: Patriots at Falcons
Alright this one wont be easy. Even at his ripe age of 37, Tony Gonzolez remains one of the premier tight ends in the NFL. That combined with the mega arm of Matt Ryan might spell trouble for a Patriots defense  strong as it may be, that lacks the chemistry of an elite defense.
Projected final: Falcons over Patriots

Week five: Patriots at Bengals
Playing their second straight road game, the Patriots will head to Cincinnati to play a team that despite making the playoffs last year scored 166 less points than the Patriots did last year and ended up falling to the Texans in the first round.  Andy Dalton remains with the potntal to be an elite quarterback and really if he were on a team with the receives that the Patriots posses, he might pose a bigger thret. Nonetheless when it comes down to quarter back battles Tom Brady will almost always come out on top.
Projected final: Patriots over Bengals

Week six: Patriots vs Saints
Now 2 years removed from their humiliating Bounty scandal the saints still don't seem strong enough to rejoin the club of top teams in the NFL.  Drew Brees remains a great quarterback but after a 7 and 9 2012 season where even he wasn't playing to his fullest i cant see his long time team taking down one whose offence has been one of the best in the league for so long.
Projected final: Patriots over Saints

Week seven: Patriots at Jets
At the beginning of the season, he won't probably be a big factor, but by week seven the pending addition of  Darell Revis and a chance of some other trades made by Rex Ryan might spell trouble for the Pats.
Projected final: Jets over Patriots

Week eight: Patriots vs Dolphins
The last time these two teams played, the Miami Dolphins scored nothing. The Patriots defense dominated the Dolphins and with severally new pieces added to their defensive roster I cant see that trend ending this time around.
Projected final: Patriots over Dolphins

Week nine: Patriots vs Steelers
Going into their week 10 bye, the Patriots will be driving and most likely willing to lay everything on the line with the knowledge that they will have almost 2 weeks to recover. In addition to that Ben Rothlessberger is not a fast QB meaning that with a much stronger more athletic Patriots defensive line might make it so that  a few key sacs could mean the difference between victory and defeat.
Projected final: Patriots over Steelers

Week ten: BYE

Week eleven: Patriots at Panthers
For 2 years now Cam Newton has been on the edge of becoming a great player yet his main asset, the running game will most likely fall victim to a viscous Pats rush defense. The Patriots will not have played in 15 days and with most of the team most likely healthy the Panthers will likely stand little chance when faced with guys like Rob Gronkowski, and Vince Wilfork.
Projected final: Patriots over Panthers

Week twelve: Patriots vs Broncos
It will be the first time since the Welker transaction that the Pats will see their former wind out in action, that combined with a Peyton Manning now more acclimated to his new team than ever will likely rip apart the Pats defense, and prove too much for Brady to make up.
Projected final: Broncos over Patriots

Week thirteen: Patriots at Texans
Last time around, the Patriots were able to isolate the all star defensive line of the Texans allowing Brady seemingly endless amounts of time to get passes off and over the course of 1 regular season game and one playoff game outscore the Texans 83 to 42, a near 2 to 1 ratio. Not much has changed on the side of the Texans, and really the Pats defense hasn't gotten worse begging the question, how can this team to dominated the Texans so obviously possibly loose to this same teams this time around.
Projected final: Patriots over Texans

Week fourteen: Patriots vs Browns
We really don't need to go into much depth on this one. The Browns have't made the playoffs in 11 years, their last appearance being back when Tom Brady was still in the midst of his rookie year. It's just a face, the Cleveland Browns are not a good football team
Projected final: Patriots over Browns

Week fifteen: Patriots at Dolphins
Week fifteen, this their second and last game of the year against the Dolphins, yet while they Pats are likely poised to take game one, this late in the season a Dolphins team desperate for playoffs and the possibility of a coach fighting for his job might give the Patriots a run for their money.
Projected final: Patriots over Dolphins

Week Sixteen: Patriots at Ravens
They are the 2012 super bowl champions. Yet while they did down the Pats in last year conference final, the Ravens have since lost the defensive presence of Ray Lewis and the long range receiving threat of Anquan Boldin meaning that with the patriots driving towards the postseason this contest might end up going to New England.
Projected final: Patriots over Ravens

Week Seventeen: Patriots vs Bills
For the Pats it will be both a first and last for their 2013 season. Their first home game against the Bills this time around yet their last regular season game of the year. Nonetheless after some controversial comments by Bills player Stevie Jonson regarding the Boston Marathon Bombings will most likely earn him some passionate booing from New England fans a form of support that will not just deflate the Bills but also empower a Patriots offence to play to what might be a pretty dominant victory.
Projected final: Patriots over Bills

You know a 13 and 4 season really isn't much of a stretch. In addition to that, fact is, among those 4 games I think the patriots might loose at least 2 of them are bound to be close games meaning that if the Pats can come out playing good football they could easily end the season challenging for the top spot in the conference an in turn a Superbowl appearance or hopeful victory.

Bruins once again showcasing devotion to community

Posted on 18:15 by RAJA BABU

Monday, 3 people are killed, and an additional 183 are brutally injured in an attack eerily similar to a 2001 one that ended up taking the lives of thousands upon thousands of innocent New York civilians. 4 days later, mere hours after the FBI released the pictures of the two men suspected of planting these bombs, those two men raided a convenience store, hijacking a car a robbing the owner of over 800$ before moving on to bloodlessly murder an innocent 26 year old MIT official. Within hours the cops had chased the two fugitives to the Boston Metro establishment of Watertown where the men, later learned to be Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, got out of their car and proceeded to open fire on police loosing upwards of 100 rounds and lobbing several homemade grenades into the crowd of police standing before them.

Over the course of the next near 24 hours, Boston was consumed with a state of lock-down as despite bomber Tamerlan being killed during the shootout, the remening suspect Dzhokhar was still on the loose as until yet another shootout just after 7 PM the next evening eventually led to the surrender and capture of a bloodied Dzhokhar.

Yet less than 24 hours after that brutal fire fight, and after having a game cancelled for the 3rd time this year the Boston Bruins took to the ice today with much more than a game on the line. Nonetheless over the next some 2 hours the Bruins debuted a string of new player and schemes as they looked to win their first game in over a week. Long story shot they didn't. Even with the new addition of Carl Soderburg and the awaited return of guys like Chris Kelly and McQuaid the bruins fell 3-2 to the Penguins loosing their 4th straight and falling 2 points behind the division leading Canadians and putting themselves in a pretty bad positions going into next week.

To say that this has been a rough week in Boston would be an understatement. Yet through this week of terror, death and unimaginable fear like they did in the immediate wake of Mondays bombings those effected by yesterdays shootout and ensuing manhunt turned to the world of sports, and heck that world was more than willing to accept them.

The 17,565 man choir

Posted on 08:42 by RAJA BABU

17,565 living breathing Bostonians. When they walked into the TD garden they came, lone members silently reminiscing on a scene the hoped never to witness. Yet when they rose from their seats, removed their caps and turned their eyes to the majestically empowering 50 stars and 13 red and white stripes of the American Flag, those near 20,000 fans stood together not just representing their own lives and sadness but the unchanging grief of a city riddled with a kind of merciless terrorism our nation hoped never to see again.

Nonetheless that kind of horrendous murder has returned  and when US president Barrack Obama took to the podium in DC a couple days ago, this is what he had so say. "Boston is a tough and resilient town.  So are its people"

We ARE tough. Yet no matter how much "toughness" one possesses within them, there is no way to unsee the carnage in Boston Monday and no way to unhear the sickening crack of those two bombs ripping apart Copley square. Instead Bostonian s flocked to the TD Garden last night, looking to relieve their pain as they attempted to rally around an outlet of success and compassion that the City of Boston has literally been built around. The Boston Bruins.

In the confusion following Monday's attacks, the Bruins were placed in a position to, because of a ever present fear of additional attacks postpone their second game of the year, this time delaying their Monday night meeting with the Ottawa Senators.

"Public safety personnel from the City and State are still gathering information regarding today's events and it is vital they have all resources available for their investigation. The thoughts and prayers of everyone in the Bruins organization are with the city of Boston and all those affected by today's tragedy.” Bruins President Cam Neely said after announcing the cancellation of the game.

Aside from the Bruins, the Boston Celtics also cancelled their game set to take place Tuesday night. This fact, coupled with the Red Sox being out of town for the majority of this week made it so that Wednesday night's  Bruins, Sabers game represented the first time since the attacks that a major sporting event would take place on Boston soil.

"It’s going to go on for a few days, weeks and possibly months. We all feel for the people that have been affected by this. It was a sad and emotional day for all of us,” said B's captain Zedeno Chara “We just have to support each other. We can all play for each other, and maybe during these tough times, help people cheer.” and while at that point Chara was representing his wish to use the Bruins play of late to help cheer up the people of Boston, before last nights game, Bruins fans were doing a pretty god job at bringing their team to its feat.

For 3 wonderful minutes a perfectly imperfect choir of 17,565 voices, showered Boston in a rendition of the national anthem where the microphone of lead anthem singer Rene Rancort was rendered unimportant. For 3 wonderful minutes 17,565 individuals stood as one as, until the last of Mondays victims was helped from the ashes, the City of Boston would never fully heal. Yet while the game kicked off supercharged with emotion, the Bruins still had a game to play and as the night went on, even that night of tribute and heavy hearts turned to one of playoff atmosphere and divisional implications.

By the conclusion of the second period, the division leading Montreal Canadians were down 5 to 2 to the Penguins and were on pace to loose their 3rd straight game, meaning that if the Bruins could salvage so much as a single point in their game with Buffalo, they would launch themselves to the top of the Northeast and in turn the second seed in the conference. In addition to that while it has long been evident that it would take a collapse of historic proportions for the Bruins to miss the playoffs, the B's pulled within one point of clenching their ticket to post season action over a week ago.  Yet with 2 games in which all the needed was 1 point, they came into last nights game riding a streak of 2 straight regulation losses looming over their heads meaning that the Boys in Black and Gold were still chasing that all important 57 point plateau, that, once achieved, would officially punch their ticket to the playoffs.

With that knowledge dominating their minds, the Bruins rode the cheers of the crowd and, after a pair of spectacular saves from backup net-minder Anton Khudobin they managed to pull out to a promising 2 to 1 lead going into the 3rd period.

"Late in the game there we just wanted to make sure that we got pucks at the net and weren't trying to be too fancy," Buffalo interim head coach Ron Rolston said when reflecting on last nights 3rd period Buffalo play. Yet while the Sabers DID in fact pound the net with shots (they racked up 11 shots in the period to bring their game total up to 27)  a slew of Anton Khudobin saves  held the the puck out of the net for much of the 3rd period. The Sabers had been pressing, and, while they would go on to tie the game with the goalie pulled, it seemed for a brief time that the deal had been done long before Miller was forced to vacate his net.

With just over 3 minutes left in the game, Bruins goalie Anton Khudobin found himself caught several feet out the front of the net as he was then feeling the immediate repercussions of a failed poke check. With Khudobin diving towards the badly managed rebound, Buffalo right wind Drew Stafford made a skillful spin-o-rama taking the puck onto his stick and rapidly blasting the shot towards the front of the net. Yet after watching the play quickly develop and as the entire Buffalo bench rose to its feet, the 34 year old bruins D-man Andrew Ference launched himself on his knees before, with his leg sitting just inches in front of the goal line he was able to kick the puck wide of the right goal post.

Yet even the antics that followed that spectacular play served as a prelude to what would occur less than 2 and a half minutes later. With the clock ticking a way and the 6 by 4 Buffalo net empty, a delay of game penalty with 48 seconds left assessed to Ference gave the Sabers a wonderful opportunity to execute a simple yet golden plan. Win the face off, set up at the top of the offensive zone and for 48 seconds just pound the Bruins net with as many shots physically possible. Long story short, that plan worked. With just over 30 seconds to go in the game and the face off won away from Bergeron, the puck was quickly passed from winger Thomas Vanak back to his defense before  the puck was urgently sent back to Vanak who had since rotated to a position just below the right face-off dot. Surveying the front of the net, Vanak watched as 2nd year forward Cody Hodgsen gained well sought after body position not only in-front of B's captain Zedeno Chara but also in a place that blocked the view of Bruin Anton Khudobin.

After assertively answering Hodgsen's calls for the puck Vanak launched the pass towards the blue paint where a quick flick of the wrist by Hodgsen the game was tied and destined for overtime. (The 10th time Boston has gone past regulation this year.)

After neither team managed to put anything past either net-minder in the 5 minute overtime, off we went to a shootout and as the eastern timezone clocks clicked past 10:00 at night the Bruins looked to send their fans to sleep happy. They didn't, well sorta.

Boston lost yesterday but with the point gained by reaching overtime, they have officially punched their ticket to the postseason, and by way of the tie breaker have leapfrogged the Canadians and Capitals to take the honers (at least for now) of being the second seeded team in the east. Yet much like almost all the sporting events that have taken place this week, high school, college or pro, wins and losses once again mean almost nothing. So many things about this game draw similarities to the other events taking place since Monday, the sings, the words of condolence and the occasional tear as the national anthem is sung. Yet one difference between this game and others was the fact that this one took place in Boston, and after kicking off the night with the less than ordinarily singing of the Star Spangled Banner, the Bruins and Sabers book-ended the evening by skating to the center of the arena and raising their sticks to the rafters, a touching salute to those whose lives were forever changed by what happened at 2:50 in the afternoon, on April 15th 2013.

9-4: Examining the Red Sox Early Season Sucsess

Posted on 09:24 by RAJA BABU

Last season the Boston Red Sox did not spend a second atop the east. 2 years ago back with the 2011 Sox team then dubbed the "dream team" their longest stint atop the division lasted just 1 and a half weeks. Yet 17 days into this new season, the Sox have been no where but the top.

13 games into the year while things really have panned out to make it evident that this entire organisation has been working to get the Sox where the want to be, 2 major facets of the Sox roster have really done what the can to work wins out of 9 of these 13 games.

First and foremost 2 weeks into the year Boston has come out on top of the heap when it comes to pitching as with the blazing combination of Jon Lester and Clay Buchholz in particular has really carried this team. With 3 games started, apiece,  2 wins for Lester and 3 for Buchholz have combined for more than half of the teams wins thus far. In addition to that, with 41 combined innings between the two of them, the two pitchers have seen just 4 runs scored against them (Buchholz has allowed just 1). Finally while manufacturing wins is truly a team effort, the skill to beat opposing hitters simply   by way of the strike out is really only under the control of the pitcher, and while in this day and age, notching a strike out isn't that hard, Lester and Buchholz have thrown way more than 1. On average, Buchholz fans just over 9 batters a game while Lester beats averages about 8.5, that tally up 1.3 for Lester and 3 for Buchholz from last years stat sheet.

Additionally while Sox pitching has dominated on the hill, aside from this most recent series where the Sox as a team hit just over .200, Boston has done a pretty good job at giving its pitching a position to play with a lead rather than despretly try to dig themselves out of a 2,3,4 run hole, and while like the pitching the Sox hitting success has been a team effort, the power combination of Mike Napoli and Shane Victorino really has been crucial. The two of them have combined to add 21 RBI's to the teams totals, and as for Napoli, aside from team mate Jacoby Ellsbury lead the team with 55 at bats.

13 games into the season, there have been so many defining factors, so many uplifting figures that it seems like panning through the countless folds of success that this year's Boston team as brought to the field would be a monumental task. Nonetheless while nearly everyone has pitched in, a select few members of this monumental team have gone above and beyond expectations to catapult the Sox to the top of the east and in turn a position they haven't held in over a year.

GO SOX!!!!! :)

#PrayForBoston: The Reaction of The Sports World to Yesterdays Attacks

Posted on 19:08 by RAJA BABU
This weeks cover of Sports Illustrated was simply a blank page with, aside from the word Boston written across the page.

2 days before this years Boston Marathon I posted a post to this blog entitled When Boston Forgets About Baseball. At that point I was referencing the ever true fact that on a yearly basis, our city casts aside the big 4 sports than on every other day of the year, instead turning their focus to the famed renewal of the annual Boston Marathon. Yet while every year we turn our eyes to the Boston Marathon at about 2:50 in the afternoon yesterday, even the athletic aspect of the Boston Marathon took a back seat. As said before, at exactly 2:50 in the afternoon, on April 15th 2013, 2 deadly explosions ripped apart Copley Square, killing 3 and injuring almost 2 hundred. Yet through this terrible tragedy one quote repeated by media members, witnesses and victims alike, seems to symbolize the compassion and heroic response of those surrounding the events. "When the worst of human nature strikes, it also showcases the best of human personality"

What happened yesterday was terrible, and while no amount of consolation can sooth the grief of the families of those killed or seriously injured, the sports community not only in Boston but across the nation has done its best to at least let those victimized by these attacks know the world feels their strife, and shares their unimaginable pain.

Below are some of those acts.

View image on Twitter

When he heard the news, Phoenix Coyotes Defense men Keith Yandle rushed to his equipment managers office with a sharpie, heavily bent on inscribing his support for Boston on his right skate.

Early yesterday morning, one of Chicago's mainstream news papers ran this picture, proclaiming it's support for Boston sports and in-turn its community.

During warm ups before yesterdays game between the Red Sox and Indians, the self adopted "anthem" of Boston Sweet Caroline was played across the entire MLB as that gesture of kindness was followed by a MLB wide moment of science.

Within Hours of the bombings, the Boston Bruins and Boston Celtics did not delay as, when it came to the Bruins postpone their game with Ottawa and for the Celtics all out cancel their game scheduled to be played tonight. "You feel helpless and it's an empty feeling. It's tough to say what you felt, other than you're proud so many people are helping out and you start to hear back from people that you know and they're OK and you're happy. But, obviously, you know there are a lot of people who are getting different news and you feel pretty heartbroken for them." Bruins D-Man Andrew Ference said as the Bruins in particular flooded the world with an out poring of support.

Just after midnight, this last night new Patriot Danny Amendola pledged to the world that for every catch he makes this season he will donate 100$ to the Marathon Relief fund and for every dropped pass he would donate 200$. If Amendola has a season similar to the one he played last year, he would end the year with 63 catches or intern 6,300$ not to mention any dropped passes.

Despite playing today's game as scheduled, the Red Sox announced that over the next few days, the jersey picture above would be hanging in the Red Sox clubhouse. The 617 represents the Boston area code.

On September 11th 2001, without a doubt the deadliest terrorist attacks in world history rocked the nation but more specifically New York City. 12 years later, 2 twin bombs blasted apart the finish line of the Boston Marathon and for what seems like the first time in so many years Boston and New York stand united, a fact verbalized per se by the banner hanging on the front facing facade of New York's Yankee stadium. (Top right corner of picture)

This is perhaps one of the most heart warming testaments to the sheer fact that what happened yesterday really did break down the boundaries of sports and life, tearing up even the fiercest of rivalries and uniting cities now more connected to one another than ever before.

It cannot be stressed enough, people were brutally murdered yesterday and while what the sports world has done to support those victimized by the monster who planted these bombs has hopefully helped it cannot change the past.

3 People died yesterday, and that will never be forgotten.

116 races, 162 winners both male and female  (the female races wasn't added until 1966 while the men's race has existed for the full 116 years) For well over a hundred years, the Boston Marathon has been the pinnacle of long distance running and with its 117th renewal set to take place this Monday, a city usually caught up in the epidemic of history and success that the Red Sox and Celtics employ, and the brutal body checking, fighting and tackling of the Bruins and Pats, will turn its eyes away from its mainstream sports instead coming to focus on the legendary annual contest that is the Boston Marathon.

As said before in it's 116 races, between the women and men there have been 162 winners (names above are all the winners listed chronologically by men and women's races respectively), yet while when 363 days ago when Wesley Korir coasted across the finish line and kissed the blue painted road that signified his completing the race, he was in fact, running across the same line on the roadway that was run upon 117 years ago, nothing about the modern race could even be compared to the one that conceived this great legacy back in the spring of 1897.

At that point in time, the sport of marathoning was a relativity new concept and as  the news surrounding inception of the Modern Olympics over in Greece running strong, stories of a sport literally born from a myth began to surface. That sport was the Marathon. Legend has it that midway through the Athenian war with the Persians (said to take place around 490 BC) the Athenian army found themselves pinned back by the mighty Persians. Desperate for reinforcements, the Athenian generals called upon a well built messenger their fighting for their army, sending him to the walls of Sparta to beg the ruthless Spartans for their help in the war. Over the next few days, Phidipides would run a combined total of around 420 miles running back and fourth between Sparta and Marathon, before upon the Athenians somehow winning the battle sprinting the 26.2 mile distance between Marathon and Athens itself hence the name "Marathon".

Back to the modern Olympics. This sport was intriguing, appealing to many as is seemed to symbolize perhaps the toughest event at that years Olympics. Over the few months between when that 1896 Olympic Marathon was announced and when it was actually held already established distance runners from across the world  each looking for a greater challenge flocked to Athens and toed the line before running what is widely regarded as the first professional modern day marathon.

When all was said and done, the race had been a huge success  and when 1 year later these same runners were looking to do it all again, this time there was no Olympic outlet, this time there was Boston.

At that point in time the United States was still just 32 years removed from the very Civil war that had threatened to tear it apart. Grover Cleveland was the president of the nation and, heck, Babe Ruth was just 2 years old. On that the 3rd Monday in the 4th month of the 1 thousand 8 hundred and 97th year since 0 AD, 15 eager Bostonians set fourth looking to concur the 24.5 mile course set out before them (the marathon wasn't lengthened to its current distance until the late 1920's). For some it took almost the entire day to beat the rolling hills and sharp turns of the Boston course yet for eventual winner John J McDermott the race was over in just 2 hours 55 minutes and 10 seconds.  But the past is the past, and while at its beginning Boston mustered just 15 participants for its inaugural marathon this race has grown into so much more as in the words of Honolulu marathon president Jim Barahal "Finishing the Boston marathon is probably the athletic achievement of a lifetime for many people." And really that's no exaggeration.

For 117 years the Boston Marathon has been a symbolism of amateur and elite excellence, a simple testament to persistence and athletic prowess and without a doubt the ultimate goal of elite runners from across the world. For 117 years when the 3rd Monday in April rolls around, while the games go on, Boston fans drop their Sox jerseys, their Tom Brady trading cards and all else, instead taking to the streets near Copley Square and the roads running into it, grasping words on cardboard signs or chants of inspiration scrawled across colored bed sheets as they fight to get as close to the  road as physically possible.

Every year on the 3rd Monday in April the Marathon makes Boston fans forget about baseball, and that's not easy to do.
